                                                                       Taipa Ferry Terminal

Q What is the working situation during Typhoon 'Hato"?

Since the terminal is by the seashore, water level was actually two meters higher than observatory’s prediction. A lot of
things needed to be repaired urgently on that day, especailly the major facilities like embarkation bridges. Moreover, the
terminal building was facing a trial, such as flooding in basement and carpark, rooftop materials were blew up, interior
false ceiling was damaged. Many situations needed to be evaluated and planned before proceed for handling; however, a
chapter of emergency problems occurred, we had no time to fix the broken parts and instead we tried to prevent further
damage to those which were still working. We have to give credit to our staff for their hard work and great support, de-
spite the terrible weather, more than 25 staff reported duty on that day .But due to all emergency situations, we still faced
shortage of manpower and staff has to perform overtime work.

Q What measurement need to be handled first? How
問 can you prioritize the procedure?

Since ferry terminal is a port of entry and exit, issues regard-
ing operation, safety and security shall be handled immediate-
ly. As it is the first typhoon encounter since opening of the ter-
minal and this is also a rare strong typhoon, many emergency
problems happened. The emergency problems we needed to
handle were dangerous, for example electrical system, when
we realized the water level in the basement had been constant-
ly increasing, we decided to turn off all electrical equipment
to prevent further electrical shortage and after turning off all
the electrical equipment, our staff had to evacuate to ensure
safety. We also performed interior electrical system examination, covered all risky equipment, turned off or set up water
flow guide to prevent danger and breakdown. We are glad that the four power generators located in the ferry terminal
were working properly during Typhoon, but we still turned off unnecessary equipment to minimize fuel usage of the
power generator, and ensuring significant electrical system such as fire control, illumination, etc. worked properly and
could last till recovery of power supply.
